Searing heat, rock-hard soil and intense summer thunderstorms can temporarily turn the dry desert into raging rivers.
Recorded reports of flooding in Clark County date back nearly 100 years. A special report History of Flooding documents floods from 1905 to 1975.
At least 35 people have died as a result of flooding here since 1960 and even winter storms in 2020 swept two people away.
Flooding has also caused tremendous economic impacts, including Presidential Disasters in 1999, and more recently, major Interstate 15 impacts near Moapa in 2014.
